Walking in Crete
For those who enjoy walking, Crete's beautiful and dramatic landscape,
dominated by majestic mountains, cut by deep gorges, and with luxuriant
lowland regions, is a paradise. Be they easy, moderate or challenging,
trails can take you to secluded areas, traditional villages and historic
sites, where the scenery is invariably breathtaking.
Spring and autumn are the prime times for walking, when the weather
is fine but not too hot. Springtime is particularly lovely with a profusion
of wildflowers blanketing the landscape, many species unique to Crete.
A long history has left evidence of cultures and civilizations spanning
over 5000 years; Minoan burial sites, Dorian cities and Byzantine chapels
dot the landscape through which you walk.
Exploring Crete on foot allows you to discover wonders of this magical
island not achievable by other means. Walks are currently organised
on a regular basis by a number of groups such as the CIC (Cretan International
Community). Books and pamphlets are also available to assist.
Whether you traverse the White Mountains, explore less well-known gorges
like Irini, Imbros and Aradana, or wander trails through rural countryside,
the wonderful variety of Crete's scenery, flora and history will enthral
you.
